4 Reasons to Own a 2020 Ford Expedition

With its abundant interior space, powerful engine, and remarkable towing capacity, the Ford Expedition is generally considered the leader of the large sport utility vehicle category. If you need to haul a large clan and tow a hefty load, there is no other option. Here’s what makes the 2020 Expedition the best choice.

Load It Up

How spacious is the Expedition? It seats eight very comfortably. Those sitting up front enjoy 43.9 inches of legroom. Second-row passengers get up to 42.6 inches of legroom, and third-row passengers have up to 40.9 inches of legroom. Despite that space devoted to passengers, cargo capacity with all seats in use is 19.3 cubic feet. Fold-down the third row of seats, and that expands to 57.5 cubic feet, and with the second row also folded down, you have 104.6 cubic feet.

Not enough? Get the Max version of the Expedition, which is 9 inches longer, and you get 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in use, 73.3 cubic feet with the third row folded down, and a whopping 121.5 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded down.

Power to Haul and Tow

The Expedition’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine employs twin turbochargers and direct fuel injection to ramp up its power. As a result, it provides 375 horsepower (400 horsepower in the Platinum trim) and 470 pound-feet of torque (480 in the Platinum) while delivering an EPA-estimated 20 mpg (17 city, 24 highway) for rear-wheel-drive models. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The standard Expedition can tow up to 9,000 pounds. Adding the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package — which includes a heavy-duty radiator, trailer backup assist, trailer brake controller, and a 3.73 limited-slip differential — and that number goes up to a best-in-class 9,300 pounds.

Enjoy the Ride

More than one reviewer has praised the Expedition’s ride and handling for a 5,400-pound vehicle and noted what’s behind it: the independent rear suspension. Unlike solid axles on competing models, the Expedition’s rear axles move independently, allowing for flat cargo space and more room for third-row passengers. Along with adjustable shocks, they also help cut down on body roll. 

New Features for 2020

All Ford Expeditions now come standard with the full Co-Pilot360 package of driver aids to keep you safe. You get automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning and forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warnings and lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts.

A new trim level, King Ranch, named for the largest ranch in the United States, is positioned between the Limited and the top-of-the-line Platinum levels. The Mesa/Ebony interior features distinctive Del Rio leather seating with the King Ranch logo, a distinctive center console with wood veneer, leather door trim, and a leather-covered steering wheel.

The Expedition’s popular black accent package is now available on the base XLT trim level. It includes Ebony seats, 20-inch six-spoke black aluminum wheels, gloss black skid plates, and Agate Black exterior paint.
